Amazon rugby TV rights

Amazon already had a tie-up with the Six Nations through its data-analysis service, and now the TV arm of the group part-owned by multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos is making a long-trailed entry into rugby’s broadcast market.

The 24-day Autumn Nations Cup would fit into the month’s free trial offered to new Amazon Prime customers, and it coincides with the shopping surge expected on ‘Black Friday’ and the run-up to Christmas.

From the Six Nations’ point of view, airing Ireland’s matches on Channel 4 (and RTE in Ireland) maintains some free-to-air access, which could be a model for its flagship tournament in February and March, currently available on BBC and ITV.

The next question is whether the rights packages to various competitions including the English Premiership will eventually be bundled up to one broadcaster, as they come up for renewal in the next couple of years.

It is a year since CVC made a £300m bid for a share in the Six Nations in addition to the private-equity fund’s stake in the Premiership and Pro14.

The CVC/Six Nations negotiation is “still ongoing”, a source told i on Friday. But the Six Nations unions of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy agreed last February to pool their media rights for the first time, and Sky’s deal for England’s autumn home matches has ended, as has the BBC’s corresponding arrangement with Scotland and Wales.

What’s more, the British & Irish Lions’ tours are another product coming up for grabs.

Simon Muderack, the chairman of Scarlets in Wales, told the Western Mail last week: “CVC are looking to bundle the TV rights for the Gallagher Premiership, PRO14 and European rugby.

“That will be a sliding-doors moment in the history of the game. They will look to maximise revenue and they won’t be doing that by denying people a good quality product.

“You look at Formula One now since CVC’s involvement, with the calibre of the teams, the personalities, the sponsorship deals, the TV coverage.
